Happy 1st Birthday MCR Scenewipe

Friday, March 4th, 2011, 9:00 am

A year ago today we launched Manchester Scenewipe, an online video archive and blog, featuring hundreds of stripped back sessions with some of the world’s finest acts, as well as the incredible local talent manchester is home to.

When we started the site this time last year, we didn’t think for a second that we would gain the amazing support we have received, nevermind the 250,000 hits we have clocked up! We even got to film in Seattle, USA!

So as a big thank you to everyone who has checked out the site over the past year, we are giving away a free compilation album of some of our favourite Manchester acts! The album can be streamed and downloaded here:

We also wanted to re-visit a few of our favourite sessions, starting with our very first, kevin devine! Please excuse the shakey camera work, we were terrified!

So, here are a few of our favourite sessions, after filming over 200 of them, choosing wasn’t easy, but these are the ones that we will always remember!

First up is WHY? We were totally star struck when we met up with Yoni Wolf, and even more blown away when he met us at Eighth Day Cafe and performed this unique cover of ‘Half a Person’ by The Smiths. As any WHY? fan will understand, this will always be a special moment for us.

Next up is Oxbow. Oxbow made us work for this rare session. First we were set the task by frontman, Eugene Robinson, of convincing the band to get involved! As we nervously asked the very mardy drummer if he was up for it, Eugene whispered “You’re losing them” with a wry smile on his face. Luckily, they all got on board and they gave us a great session. Nothing can ever prepare you for Eugene’s vocals being screamed at you from 2 feet away.

This was the first session where we were able to use a truley magnificent location with a touring band, and it doesn’t get much better than underneath a T-Rex skeleton. Lissie and her band were lovely guys, however their manager was a nightmare! After tasting the water from the museum kitchen to check it was OK for Lissie to drink (she really didn’t care) and conducting his own soundcheck with our gear, we finally got to film this stunning performance!

This is still the funniest session to date. We walked into Forsythe’s piano shop with Sophie’s Pigeons to film their session. Singer, Sophie, took her place in front of a very expensive grand piano and we began to film this one chance session. Before we were even half way through the song, the incredible store manager came to boot us out! This will always make us chuckle!

Recently, there has been a huge amount of awesome bands coming out of Manchester, with the likes of Weird Era, Brown Brogues, Driver Drive Faster and spokes to name just a few. With this in mind, here’s one of our favourite recent sessions, filmed at The BBC Philharmonic with the wonderful, Pâ–˛tterns.

Well, We’ve had a blast, here’s to another year of great music from our favourite city!

Lots of Love,

Toby & Sam
