Arriving at a gig too early is not very fashionable or trendy so I arrived at 8.30, thinking “It’s OK, the support band will nearly have finished so I’ll get to see them and fully enjoy Gotye.”

Well… Gotye got on stage for 8.30 and I was quite astonished to be honest as, for a Friday night, you don’t expect the main band to start that early!

But nevermind, the room is full and the atmosphere seems great. Wouter “Wally” De Backer is banging the drums and the crowd love it.

I knew Gotye’s music has always been eclectic and listening to one of his albums is like taking a train ticket to an unknown destination. And so was their concert.

They played tunes such as the beautiful Hearts A Mess, Smoke and Mirrors and The Easy Way. Kimbra was not  there to sing Somebody That You Used To Know, but we all sang her part, not that we did it better, just louder. I couldn’t find a version of their Manchester gig but it sounded like this :

However THE song I really enjoyed listening to and watching was State of Art. The 50′s suburban utopian style animation was simply awesome!

Overall, I really enjoyed the gig, if it wasn’t for some people who kept on talking, sorry shouting, for at least 20 minutes before I told them to “Shut up”. For a minute, I saw myself drawn into a fight but it was just my imagination… And 2 against 4 is not really fair, is it?

If there is one thing which utterly annoys me at gigs is people not respecting either the artist or the other people who paid to come and see someone they really like. It’s always the same deal. An artist or a band gets one song broadcasted on every radio and you end up at the gig with a very mixed crowd, half of it having come just to listen to THE song and simply doesn’t care about the rest. So to these people, I just want to say “Just don’t bother buying a ticket, listen to Youtube at home whilst drinking your beer and talking to your mates until your heart is content”, I swear I will be eternally greatful.

Let’s face it, Peter Gabriel was ripe for a reboot. At least this version circumnavigated any association with balding Yuppie drummers.
