Trojan Horse – Trojan Horse

Every couple of months I seem to go through an uninspired loop of new music, and this month was one of those months. This was until Manchester’s Trojan Horse blew open my mind with a genre spanning ‘Self Titled’ debut album that shows a forward thinking band beyond it’s three years.
From the opening track of ‘Mr Engels Says’ the band lay down their intentions with this mesmerising album of Psych-Math Rock coupled with elements of death metal and Yeasayer-esque world beats. However they never loose themselves and come back with huge rock hooks to show this is a band with the capacity to push the boundaries.
‘Laces and Racists’ and ‘Sex and the 6Eight’ are fantastic examples of a band at it’s most accessible and commercial but at no point do they lose their integrity as a modern progressive band, with tongue-in-cheek tales of an industrial north England in ‘Ballad of the Swell Mob’ and ‘Disciplining the Reserve Army’
In a city that is once again been looked at by the world’s musical press as a trend setting city, Manchester should champion Trojan Horse as a band who blur the edges of what is expected of progressive modern music.
