Since forming in 1996, of Montreal have been one of the most difficult bands around to sonically pin down. Fronted by Kevin Barnes, their sound has been one of almost constant reinvention, consistently innovating and tinkering with their output, from the weird, almost folksy early release Cherry Peel evolving to the glam tinged pop of their seminal releaseHissing fauna, Are You The Destroyer? Through to the psychedelia of most recent releasesFalse Priest, Paralytic Stalks and Lousy with Sylvianbriar, Barnes seems to constantly be on a voyage of musical discovery.
Despite this reluctance to settle down, critical appreciation has never faded. Of Lousy with Sylvianbriar, Paste magazine stated “Whether exposing light or dark, or some blank hue in the middle, Barnes has all but bulls-eyed his status as a brilliantly daring artist”, giving the LP 92% – sentiments backed up by the Clash who called it “a genre-morphing triumph that reveals new surprises with each listen”, while Filter (8/10), PopMatters (8/10), Pitchfork (7.4/10) and Consequence of Sound (8/10) all lent their voices to the acclaim.
